The Silicates Research Unit is based within the Department of Design, at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, UK. The Unit was established in September 2005.
The rationale for establishing a Silicates Research Unit is to foster innovative
research within the areas of craft, architectural and industrial ceramic / silicate practice.
The proposal for the Unit has grown out of the research collaboration between myself
and Ceramics Research Student - Alasdair Bremner.
The intention being to examine and develop new technologies and manufacturing
processes that will lead to the development of new materials, processes, forms and
aesthetic qualities within both craft and industrial contexts.
We are particularly keen to focus research activity on the development of studio based
technologies and processes that can be applied to industrial production.
Research will examine in detail the commercial potential of materials being developed:
construction / architectural applications.
Links have been established with a number of manufacturers within the region,
with view to exploring opportunities for high volume industrial production and
finishing processes, resulting in opportunities for Knowledge Transfer.
